It’s been more than a year since Puerto Rico has been devastated by the harsh effects of Hurricane Maria in September 2017, but the island is still feeling the effects. Puerto Rico’s residents have been working to rebuild and restore, but still have a long road to recovery. For the second consecutive year since this tragedy - and 6th year overall - YouthBuild Philly’s selected staff and students will be visiting Utuado, Puerto Rico for a week of service to help rebuild the island. From April 10-17, 2019 20 students and 7 staff members will work with local city officials on high-demand projects to help provide relief to the city’s residents.
Beyond the impact of service, students will have the chance to fully immerse into Puerto Rican culture by connecting with local residents, learning about the history of Puerto Rico and touring historic landmarks throughout Utuado and San Juan. “Visiting Utuado gave students a chance to broaden their worldview while also making a deep impact on a community beyond Philadelphia.” - Ted Molloy, Individual Giving Coordinator and Spring Break Service Trip 2017 Staff.
The Spring Break Service Trip is a life changing opportunity for YouthBuild students - for most, this will be their very first time boarding a plane and traveling beyond the continental United States. Students often return from this trip with a new perspective on service, travel, and their own lives at home. We hope that you'll consider supporting this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the talented, motivated and generous young people at YouthBuild Philly to serve a community in need.
