We are raising money for our second annual 4 day weekend Summer Trauma Camp 2.0 that will serve up 22 individuals sentenced as youth to travel in Northern Michigan to enjoy some much needed relaxation and mental health therapy after the COVID-19 lockdown. Many of our YJF members have never been swimming or camping due to long periods of incarceration. We will offer clinical trauma workshops during the day and evening by campfire to help ease their reentry back into society as they enjoy numerous other recreational activities. We will also be piloting a peer support program for current justice impacted youth to be mentored by formerly incarcerated youth who have now become successful community engaged adults!
We currently have generous support from the Michigan Collaborative to End Mass Incarceration (MI-CEMI), nn Arbor Area Community Foundation (AAACF), and the Community Foundation of Southeast Michigan's (CFSEM) Michigan Justice Fund.
Thank you to all of our supporters from last year that helped us make a successful experience for our YJF members as well as receive front page media coverage from the Detroit Free Press:
The mission of Youth Justice Fund (YJF), which is a 501c3 non-profit is to assist returning citizens, sentenced as youth with services and resources necessary to ensure human dignity and full participation in their communities. The underlying concept of YJF is that we, as a society, have deeply failed our youth, and we, as a community, need to welcome them back and provide the support, understanding and compassion that has been lacking, in our policies and treatment of youth in the criminal justice system, and in their lives, before they entered the system. YJF and its partners seek to humanize formerly incarcerated individuals, remove the stigma they often face, and emphasize their unlimited potential to grow into contributing citizens with dignity and hope.
