Every child needs the nurturing love of a mother, and no matter what one may believe, family figures are essential to the growing and prospering of our youth. Unfortunately, not every child gets the essential family connection and healthy environment they need to develop. Natural disaster, war, and government corruption leave behind millions of families powerless, afraid, and stricken by hunger and poverty. Desperate and unable to support their families, parents in these situations may have no other choice but to let go of their children and have them placed in orphanages, hoping that these institutions will provide the best options for them. However, skulking behind the walls of these institutions are more often than not barbarous, neglectful environments. Here, children are stripped of their identities, herded like sheep, and even, in some cases, caged. The lack of attention children receive in institutions hinders their physical condition and psychological development and welfare, leading to a disconnection from the world around them, and their futures are plagued with the extreme likelihood of falling into abusive situations, prostitution, crime, and suicide. By funneling funds towards the reconstruction of family, community, and educational programs and away from the spread of abusive institutions, we have the capability to reunite over 8 million children with their families and find humane, fit homes for orphans in need of any help they can get in order to escape the traumatic, damaging environments they know. I, through the Lumos Foundation, am aiming to change the lives of as many children as I can by fundraising for the formation and stability of family care systems and helping put a stop to the injustice towards humanity that is the trafficking of children and institutionalism. We, as the world and a family, have the duty of protecting our youth and providing them with the assets they need to have the future they are entitled to.
