Young Writers Project is an independent nonprofit founded in Burlington, VT in 2006. Our mission is to inspire, mentor, publish, and promote the work of young writers and artists. Young Writers Project (YWP) provides a platform for youth, mostly ages 13-19, to speak out on issues and to tell their stories with clarity and power through a dynamic website, youngwritersproject.org; publications (annual anthology, digital magazine, newspapers, public radio and other media); live and online workshops; and community spoken word events. YWP is defined by respect and quality, a place where young people gain the ability to express themselves clearly, think creatively, and discover who they are – a process that is life-changing in both their personal and professional lives.
The funds raised in this challenge will help support YWP's Community Journalism Project, a year-long initiative for the 2019-20 school year that will immerse Vermont middle and high school students in the skills of researching, interviewing, writing, and editing stories about their communities – and their own lives as teens within those communities – for publication and performance. This project, which will happen inside and outside of school, has the potential to have a profound impact on Vermont's young people and their communities.
