Young Women’s Health Initiative - Empowering women and girls so they can, so THEY WILL!
The Young Women’s Health Initiative is working with Malawian girls and educators to eliminate school days missed every month due to the lack of sanitary supplies and misinformation about their menstrual periods. Many of the girls are falling behind in their studies and even dropping out of school.
Warm Hearts Foundation (WHF) has chosen 12 rural schools with over 2,000 girls who are currently receiving no support for dealing with this natural biological experience. 250 feminine hygiene kits assembled by Days for Girls volunteers in America have been provided in the first two schools. The results reported by the teachers has been perfect attendance along with more confidence and dedication towards their studies by the girls. The teachers also expect the drop-out rate will be reduced and that the girls will be less susceptible to early marriage and pregnancy. Currently, half of rural Malawian girls are married before they are 18 and have a child by the age of 19. Girls from 10 other schools need the same support.
In addition to the kit, the WHF staff, under the leadership of a local nurse/midwife, is providing education and emotional support for the girls. These sessions help to eliminate the misconceptions and embarrassment on the part of the girls and greatly improve their attitudes and confidence. This poor African nation desperately needs their future leadership and contribution.
WHF plans to expand the Young Women’s Health Initiative in 2020 and needs your help to provide 2000 kits that will give these girls hope for the future.
One kit cost $10 - How many girls will your donation impact and empower?
