In the summer of 2018, Yonkers Public Schools announced the availability of free lunch for all. While this will be helpful in combating the issues of childhood hunger in Yonkers, it reveals that there is much poverty. 77% of children are affected by poverty. The Center for Disease states that 1 in 6 children doesn't know where their next meal is coming from.
The YMCA seeks to feed hungry children in four low-income areas of Yonkers with healthy meals, year-round, The four sites will allow children to walk-in and eat a healthy meal.
This will be coupled with two days a week of physical activity at the four sites the YMCA will serve at. The number of sites will increase as funding becomes available.
