The ‘Alive in Community’ project takes what YG2D [www.yg2d.com] has learned is at the heart of its work – cultivating spaces for community sharing of music, art, poems and stories relating to mortality – and brings it to an even wider audience. The project specifically supports YG2D to offer a series of free/sliding-scale community music and arts events over a 3-month period throughout San Francisco and Oakland in a variety of spaces. The events will culminate in a final live performance commemorating 10 years in the community for YG2D, offering a place for connection and celebration.
The event series will take place in venues, cafes, parks, galleries and public spaces, and will provide artists and community members the opportunity to share their poems, stories, songs, and art about the one connecting truth we all share: mortality. YG2D will organize, promote, and host each event, and each will be tailored to the space and local community. In addition to the “open mic” community sharing portion of each event, YG2D musicians and volunteers will share stories and songs written for patients through the “Songs for Life” hospice & music program, and for men of the “Alive Inside” prison project, promoting community connection to those that are often invisible to us – the incarcerated and the dying. Finally, the project will draw on YG2D’s support from local bands and musicians to host a final, live performance open to everyone, where we celebrate 10 years in community and invite new members to join the celebration of life in a community that honors death.
