February 26, 1996, YES Institute was officially incorporated in the State of Florida as Project YES, Inc. This is our 24th year of serving South Florida!
Our mission is to prevent suicide and ensure the healthy development of all youth through powerful communication and education on gender and orientation.
We invite you to donate to our “24 in 24” end-of-year GoFundMe campaign, to directly fund our Youth Advisory Leadership Council and our Communities for Safe Classrooms program for 2020. Why give? We are creating a world free of youth suicide and violence. Your support will make this vision a reality.
“YES Institute has changed our family in so many ways. It’s given our child a safe space to be himself and also provided the tools and resources we have needed as a family to help us navigate through this journey. Thank you so much for the work you do.” – The de Lamar Family, YES Institute Kiaora Society Donors
South Florida high school students who are stigmatized or rejected due to their experience of orientation and gender are at high risk of self-harm:
• 6% of heterosexual youth make an attempt;
• 24% of gay, lesbian, bisexual youth make an attempt;
• 31% of transgender youth make an attempt.
The initiatives of YES Institute target the root causes of rejection. Crisis hotlines, medication, and Baker Act facilities have a necessary role in emergency situations. YES Institute coordinates with therapists to immediately engage families with prevention education and support.
YES Institute dares to ask, “What needs to be different in our schools, families, and faith communities so youth never turn to self-harm in the first place? What message or communication is having young people feel they don’t belong and are not loved?”
