A message from Melissa Withers
What's an Opportunity Divide...and why should you care?
Young people who want to contribute to our country's economic future are being prevented from doing so. Inadequate education, fractured community infrastructure, failing schools, and economic inequity put a stable career out of reach for millions of young Americans.
Meanwhile, 12 million jobs requiring post secondary education will go unfilled over the next decade.
This is the Opportunity Divide and it is putting our economy, the health and safety of our community, and even our democracy at risk.
THERE IS HOPE!
Today you can help by supporting Year Up. Launched in 2000, Year Up works to close the Opportunity Divide by helping young adults reach their full potential.
Year Up achieves this mission through a one-year, intensive training program that provides under-served young adults with a combination of hands-on skill development, coursework eligible for college credit, corporate internships, and wraparound support.
I've been lucky to work with some of the 20,000+ young people who have participated in YearUp's program and I have seen firsthand how its program can change lives.
I NEED YOUR HELP!
I am honored to run the 2019 Boston Marathon for Year Up.
My goal is to raise $26,200. That's $1000 for every mile I will run. $1,000 for the next 26 young lives that Year Up will transform.
You can read more about Year Up here: https://www.yearup.org
Every dollar I raise will help Year Up connect more young people with the tools and opportunities they need to get a good paying job and lay the foundation for a dynamic and fullfilling career.
You can also help by spreading the word. Thanks again for supporting me, and Year Up, on this 26.2 mile, $26,200 adventure!
You can always reach me at melissa.withers at gmail.com THANK YOU!!
PS. In case you are wondering, this will be my fourth marathon. My most recent were the Chicago and Philadelphia marathons in 2017. Figured this might be good intel if you were putting odds on whether or not I could pull this off!
