Backstory.
In 1999, Sister Teresa Marie founded Tender Loving Care (TLC) orphanage when she was working as a surgical nurse and saw how many infant baby girls were left to die. She knew she couldn't stand by and watch. When asked what she hoped to accomplish in founding the orphange, Sister Teresa responded, “My goal is to raise them (the babies) with love, so when they find a home, they know how to love and be loved.” Her dream is being realized here and now.
Today, TLC is home to 20 girls ranging in age from 5 - 18. Their development is nothing short of extraordinary with many of the girls on track to attend college! Something unimaginable just years ago.
Why are we fundraising?
Let's face it, the safety of women in India is not in their favor at this moment in time. In fact, India was recently ranked the #1 most dangerous country for women by Thomson Reuters Foundation. More than ever, an education will be key for these girls.
Currently, all of the girls' needs have been taken care of by individual sponsorships and Project Left Behind (PLB). But with the drastic increased cost of higher education, more funding is needed to keep the young women on track for a bright future.
100% of all donations will go towards the increased cost of college tuition and fees.
As they start their young adult lives, TLC, PLB and the girls' sponsors will remain committed to these incredible individuals who are defying odds. PLB will fundraise each year the girls are working towards their degrees.
Here are the numbers.
• Six girls are on track to begin college within the next 12 months.
• Many of the girls are interested in nursing and four years of nursing school costs roughly $6,000.
• Our goal is to raise the $9,000* it will cost for all six of them to complete their first year of higher education.
*(If we raise more than $9,000, the money will be earmarked for the following year.)
