Baloo, the search and rescue dog, was injured in a training accident in November 2019.
He jumped off a second story parking structure while working hard, and while it was horrifying to watch, we are thankful Baloo’s medical team says he should be able to return to work.
But Baloo needs surgery and we’re asking for help.
You probably know search and rescue dogs (SAR K9s) are valuable assets in wilderness searches, avalanches, natural disasters, mass casualty events and in locating missing people. Dedicated handlers and well-trained dogs are required to be effective in search efforts.
Baloo is one of these highly trained dogs serving the Community in the mountains of Colorado right along our sheriffs and other law enforcement professionals with all the gusto you’d imagine from a high energy lab.
Searching for lost souls in the woods or on the slopes of our mountains is what Baloo lives for and I told him I’d do anything possible to get him back to his former working success.
Baloo needs a couple of surgeries to repair the damage he suffered during a training scenario, when he leapt around 20 feet down onto concrete.
Can you please help me, help Baloo?
Your donation will refill the Veterinary Fund at Colorado Rapid Avalanche Deployment and Search And Rescue Dogs of Colorado. The surgery covers Baloo’s broken leg as well as fixing several fractured and crushed teeth.
So what happened?
Search dog teams train regularly at different venues to practice and improve skills necessary to stay effective.
On Sunday, November 17, Baloo and I had just finished a difficult – but very cool – scent specific training problem in a large abandoned building in the Denver area. For our second problem of that morning we started working a “double-blind” scenario in a huge parking structure.
And that’s when Baloo – apparently so intent on driving to source (finding what he was searching for) – he didn’t notice the big drop, was moving too fast for me to ask him to stop … it all happened in a mere instant. I thought I had just watched my great working dog leap to his death. Horrifying.
Running downstairs to get to Baloo, I realized he was still working!! This sweet, great dog was so committed to doing his job, he wouldn’t stop even after such a huge fall. Completely amazed by this fantastic animal – my partner – I immediately started taking care of him and working with my teammates to get him to further care.
Thankfully the wonderful team at VRCC and Apex in Denver are focused on getting Baloo back to his working life. I am grateful for their expertise, love and care! We are so lucky that we get this opportunity to rehab this great dog – Baloo – back to health.
Your donation is a blessing for Baloo, and other wonderful superhero dogs like him.
Please donate to Baloo so he can get back to work. Every penny helps and will be used to take care of awesome SAR K9s who get hurt, or become sick, during their working lives.
Thank you! Baloo and Janie
