When the COVID-19 pandemic first hit back in March of 2020, I wanted to do something to help. What came to mind for me was the reality of how this pandemic deeply affects survivors of domestic abuse. Reports of domestic abuse throughout the country have increased due to social isolation, making it more challenging for survivors both financially and in seeking support.
I experienced an abusive relationship when I was in my early 20s. For nearly a year I felt isolated, alone, afraid. With the help of friends I was able to get away from my abuser, but not everyone is that lucky. I attended a support group through Women Helping Women and it encouraged me and empowered me to pull away from my abuser and start a new life.
It is through organizations such as this that survivors of gender-based violence can find support and empowerment. With your donation, we can help provide this support to those who need it during such turbulant times.
In addition, if you make a minimum donation of $10, you will receive a PDF copy of my short story, "The Movement of Whales", which is about a teenager who travels along the Oregon coast to escape her abusive father and search for meaning in her life. Though fictional, this story was inspired by my own experiences with abuse when I was a teenager.
The mission of Women Helping Women is to prevent gender-based violence and to empower all survivors. Please help me in furthering their mission by giving a donation today.
Thank you for being you-
