After attending WE day, many students were inspired to volunteer their time for the water pillar of WE. Throughout the year two classes have worked together on a few small campaigns including taking action to reduce ocean plastics through behavioral changes that we pledged as individuals and as a collective. Recently our focus has shifted from oceans to fresh water and we have been learning a lot about the struggle to access clean drinking water in many parts of the world. Our two classes are developing empathy and understanding as we read A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park. The story of Salva Dut has allowed us to enter into some difficult conversations about equity and access to water around the world. As a group, we are inspired to take a symbolic walk for water to raise funds and to also raise awareness about this issue. We know that $25 is enough to provide one person with clean water for life, but $1000 is enough to provide for a whole community. Our goal is to provide water for as many people as we can. We are hoping to raise at least $1000.
