For almost 70 years, Lone Star Legal Aid (LSLA) has served low-income clients who cannot afford a private attorney. We have provided free civil legal help to hundreds of thousands of people, ranging from veterans to seniors on fixed incomes, from vulnerable children to defrauded consumers, from persons with disabilities to crime victims. In many instances, our free legal help is life-altering.
LSLA is the fourth largest legal aid organization in the U.S. Headquartered in Houston, we operate an additional 12 offices, covering one-third of the state, a region made up of 72 counties in East Texas and along the Texas Gulf Coast. Within our vast service area, LSLA has an eligible client population of 2 million at 125% of federal poverty guidelines. We are the area’s only full-service civil legal aid provider, engaging in vigorous advocacy through community education, legal advice, brief services (such as preparing living wills and letters to landlords), negotiation, administrative representation, and litigation, including in-court representation. Our practice areas include eviction and foreclosure defense, spousal and child abuse, sexual assault, health care, disability claims, employment law, income maintenance, public benefits, consumer law, bankruptcy, elder law, victim rights, veteran benefits, federal tax matters, estate planning and probate, education, civil rights, and disaster relief. LSLA also undertakes special endeavors to more effectively represent underserved populations and to provide focused representation in selected substantive and geographic areas. Current projects include Connecting Texas Kids to Coverage, the Equitable Development Initiative, the Foreclosure Prevention Project, Legal Aid to Survivors of Sexual Assault, a Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic, the Military & Veterans Unit, and the Texas Crime Victim Legal Assistance Network.
