The Virginia Men’s Lacrosse Team is proud to announce the 11th annual Will Barrow Memorial Flag Football Tournament and Fundraiser this November. Originally created in 2009 by Max Pomper, a former teammate of Will’s, this fundraiser allows our program to honor Will’s life and celebrate his memory. The 2019 Will Barrow Fundraiser will benefit two meaningful organizations in honor of Will’s Legacy:
1) The UVA Helpline:The UVA HELP Line, (434)-295-TALK, is an anonymous, confidential telephone service serving the residents of Charlottesville, Albemarle County and the University of Virginia. Affiliated with UVA's Madison House, HELP strives to provide callers with an empathetic ear for any sort of issue they wish to discuss and help find long-term services in the community for callers, such as counseling services, medical services or drug treatment programs. This year, we look forward to continuing to raising awareness regarding suicide prevention and provide a full year of funding to the UVA Helpline, which has provided an invaluable resource for individuals battling mental health issues within our community.
2) Harlem Lacrosse: ‘Will Barrow-Harlem Lacrosse Scholarships’Following the tremendous success of this fundraiser in years past, in 2018 we were thrilled to establish the first ever ‘Will Barrow-Harlem Lacrosse Scholarships’. We are proud to introduce you to the first two Harlem Lacrosse high school seniors to be awarded this scholarship created in Will’s honor: Souleymane Ballo and Roxana Falcon. Will Barrow forever left his mark on the UVA program and lacrosse community, and these student-athletes were chosen among their Harlem Lacrosse peers as they embodied his qualities of leadership, work ethic, and compassion. We have incredibly high hopes that we can expand and maximize our impact on the lives of the hardworking and talented youth of Harlem Lacrosse. Harlem Lacrosse has now expanded and exists in New York, Boston, Los Angeles, Baltimore, and Philadelphia. Just as our Virginia program is composed of players from across the country, we would like to spread the impact of Will’s legacy nationwide and establish at least six total scholarships for both male and female Harlem Lacrosse participants across the country. We can think of no better way to honor Will’s memory than by opening doors and providing educational equity to a new generation of talented and determined young people who embody Will’s passion, loyalty, and commitment.
Finally, the heart of this fundraiser has always been the Will Barrow Flag Football Tournament, which gathers members of the lacrosse community from schools around the country to Charlottesville one weekend in November for a flag football competition. This year the tournament will be hosted on Lambeth Field on Saturday, November 9th.
We are offering a handful of opportunities in which you can contribute to our efforts. The first $5,000 of our fundraising will be directed to the UVA Helpline, and then the remaining funds will be used for our Will Barrow Scholarships. You have the option to participate as an individual donor here at our GoFundMe page, or anyone wishing to function as a corporate sponsor through a 501(3)(c) fully tax deductible donation can email us by clicking the contact button above.
An old African proverb says: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” We look forward to embarking on this unified and meaningful effort with you all, and deeply appreciate your kindness and generosity. Help honor Will’s legacy by supporting individuals struggling with mental health issues and giving young, determined students the chance to follow their dreams!
Thank you from all of us at UVA Lacrosse!
