In Oregon, more than 40,000 people have fled their homes this season to escape from wildfires. Wildfires can spread quickly and are destructive of everything and everyone in their paths.
Feelings such as overwhelming anxiety, constant worrying, trouble sleeping, and other depression-like symptoms are common responses before, during, and after wildfires. Other signs of emotional distress related to wildfires include:
-Having thoughts, memories, or nightmares related to the wildfire that you can’t seem to get out of your head
-Worrying a lot of the time; feeling guilty but not sure why
-Difficulty engaging in work or school life
Children, older adults, and first responders are especially vulnerable to the mental health risks of wildfire disasters. Returning to a home, business, school, or place of worship impacted by a wildfire may cause additional distress, especially if there is structural damage. A temporary or permanent loss of employment may also occur leading to more stress and depression.
We know it isn't easy to 'get back to normal' after this type of tragedy and no one should have to face this devastating experience alone. Wild Heart Therapy (a project of The Children Are Our Future) is here to help by providing quality, mental health services to those impacted by Oregon wildfires. We are raising money to provide 100 sessions free of charge to survivors and family members displaced or otherwise affected by the 2020 fires.
With your generosity wildfire survivors can receive the support they need to begin the healing process. Wild Heart Therapy needs you to help us achieve our goal by providing 100 free therapy sessions to wildfire survivors.
