Women in Environment (WIE) is coordinating virtual food drives through Feeding America in our Portland, Seattle-Puget Sound, and SF Bay Area geographies to help feed people who are experiencing economic hardship. Many of these individuals are seniors or people with serious health conditions who cannot safely leave their homes at the moment due to the COVID-19 pandemic, or children whose access to food has been restricted as a result of school closures. Feeding America provides healthy, affordable food for people through their food banks and meal delivery programs to help feed people who cannot leave their homes.
The typical operations of Feeding America, which are based on large food donations and volunteerism, have been disrupted due to the tremendous pressure placed on the grocery supply chain and the shelter-in-place orders in effect in our states. As a result, Feeding America has requested monetary donations instead of food donations in order to adapt to the current environment caused by the COVID-19 crisis.
Please consider supporting Feeding America and the critical service they provide to children, adults, and seniors in need by donating to one of the organization’s local affiliates – 100% of your donation will go directly to Feeding America’s local affiliates to support their operations. We’ll be having a friendly WIE competition among our three geographies to see which one can raise the most money for Feeding America, so we encourage our WIE members to share this message with friends and family who may want to donate to this cause. Links to the WIE Can Help virtual food drive are provided below for each of our local Feeding American affiliates – the Oregon Food Bank, Food Lifeline (Seattle-Puget Sound), SF-Marin Food Bank, and Alameda County Community Food Bank.
WIE members and friends who donate are encouraged to send their name, photograph, and location to WIE_admin@womeninenvironment.org so that we can highlight the amazing work of the WIE community on our and at upcoming networking events.*
