As a near life-long Mainer, I have learned that the secret to surviving winter is to embrace all its glory and find a way to get outside. As a kid, my dad and I would spend days turning the hill next to our house into a luge run for a tube. If you were lucky, you went so fast you landed in the birdox, laughing as you walked back up the hill picking them off your hat. Now that I have kids of my own, we have found our true love of skiing as a family and are always a little sad to see the snow disappear.
Now, skiing is not easily accessible to many families and many outdoor winter activities require an investment of time and money. For children in less fortunate families, this can mean spending the winter inside binge-watching screens, bouncing off the walls and likely giving their parents grey hair.
What if we could help those kids find a life-long love for Maine winters and the great outdoors, while simultaneously giving their parents the peace that comes with kids who are tired from a day of physical activity? This is where WinterKids comes in. The WinterKids foundation helps keep Maine kids active all winter long, helping build healthy habits and a love for the outdoors all year-round.
Well, we can help. This year I’m turning my love of skiing into a fund-raising machine for Winterkids by participating in their annual D24 event. What is the D24 event you ask? D24 is a 24 hour downhill ski race in which I will be competing in at the end of the month. The goal of the race is for me and my team members, sponsored by our generous Maine company, WEX, to complete the max number of runs in a 24 hour period. The event is a fantastically fun way to spend a day with friends and coworkers and our fundraising goes a long way to making the lives of underprivileged children in Maine, much much better. After all, WinterKids is the only nonprofit in Maine dedicated exclusively to increasing outdoor physical activity in children and families during our longest, most sedentary season.
So, I need your help...specifically your money. Would you be willing to support me and Winterkids this year? Any donation of any size makes a huge difference in the life of a child who needs to get outside in the winter and maybe needs a little financial help to get there.
