Wellesley Service League traces its roots back to the fall of 1927, when ten young women of Wellesley decided to organize their efforts to provide volunteer service to the community. The Service League originally concentrated its efforts on assisting the Wellesley Friendly Aid Association in several projects. Within one year, the League's membership increased to forty members, and service encompassed two enduring themes: Youth and Education; and HealthCare and the Elderly.
Today, The Wellesley Service League Active membership is composed of 75 truly talented, generous, and gifted women. Our Sustainer membership consists of 100+ women who have remained involved at some level in Wellesley Service Leauge well beyond their 5 years of required service.
We are primarily a service organization, but do hold a biennial fundraiser to raise funds for the Wellesley Friendly Aid Camp Fund; and a biennial fundraiser to support our other endeavors such as...
- Awarding (2) Centennial Youth Service Award scholarships to WHS seniors who volunteer in the community.
-Contributing to the Wellesley Education Fund's Red Apple Award campaign and Annual Spelling Bee.
-Supporting our service partners
-Contributing to other community needs that fall in line with our principles (such as the Wellesley ABC program)
Our Spring 2020 Fundraiser, benefitting all that Wellesley Service League encompasses, has taken another route due the Coronavirus. Our cocktail party originally planned for May 1st had to be cancelled, however, we do not want that to prevent you from donating what you can to all our causes. Please consider making your donation here.
WFA Quotes for WSL Camp Fundraising:
“Summer camp is an important growing up and learning experience for all children. Friendly Aid’s Camp Program provides scholarships for all Wellesley children whose families could not otherwise afford to send them to camp. It’s a privilege to be able to help these families and children in such a meaningful way."
-Doug Mansfield, Chair of Friendly Aid’s Camp Committee
"Summer camp is one of the ways to provide young people with the opportunity to develop qualities of team work, self-confidence, and self-esteem that they will use for the rest of their lives. A majority of those benefitting from Friendly Aid camp scholarships attend Rec Department camps. There they have the opportunity to grow leadership skills, as some become CITs and ultimately counselors."
-Deb Cogill, President of Wellesley Friendly Aid
"Wellesley parents with very limited incomes are so thankful for the scholarships their children receive from the Friendly Aid Camp Fund. Now their children can enjoy fun-filled summers where they can meet new friends, explore new activities and develop new skills just like other children. And those at the Rec Department camps love the field trips!"
-Karen Mondell, Program Administrator at Wellesley Friendly Aid
