I am thrilled to be running the 2019 Boston Marathon on behalf of The Wellesley A Better Chance Program. After a 27 year retirement from marathon running, I am inspired to once again conquer the 26.2 mile route from Hopkinton to Boston because I believe Wellesley ABC truly changes lives not only for the capable young women in the program but for those in our community that know them. The hard work and determination of the ABC scholars combined with a deep appreciation for how the Wellesley ABC program has enriched my life and the lives of my four children motivates me to put in the hours of training needed to meet this challenge.
Wellesley ABC is part of a national program that gives academically gifted students of color an opportunity of an excellent education that would otherwise be unavailable to them. For over 45 years, Wellesley ABC scholars have lived in a group home and attended Wellesley High School. Under the direction of Resident Directors and with the help of over 100 volunteers, promising women of color from underserved communities are provided with meals, tutoring, medical and social-emotional support that help them to reach their full potential. 100% of the ABC scholars have graduated from 4 year Colleges or Universities. They have gone on to pursue a wide range meaningful careers. As one of the Healthcare Coordinators for ABC over the past five years, I have personally seen the transformation of these courageous young women from new freshmen adjusting to life away from home to confident graduates heading off to college to pursue their academic and professional dreams. Each ABC scholar has made the tough choice to leave her home and community in order to reach her academic potential. These ambitious, service-minded students with their unique perspectives and talent make lasting contributions to Wellesley and their future communities. For more information about Wellesley ABC, to learn about the current scholars or to become involved as a volunteer, I encourage you to visit https://www.wellesleyabc.org I hope you will support me as I run to help promising ABC scholars reach their educational potential. Your donation will go right to work to meet the daily needs of the ABC scholars such as food and bus transportation as well as direct program expenses including house utilities, tutoring, health insurance and summer enrichment opportunities designed to encourage personal growth and community service outside the classroom.
