The Webers are fundraising for Get Up and Go For ALS virtual event!
Our physical challenges:
Gail has chosen to bike a 61 mile donut tour (broken up into 3 trips)--she will bike to Dexter Bakery, Benny's Bakery, DJ's Bakery, Dom Bakeries, Washtenaw Dairy, and Dimo's Deli & Donuts. May the best fritter win!
Tim definitely inherited his mom's sweet tooth: he has chosen to bike a little over 50 miles across trips to visit 10 ice cream shops and 1 coffee shop (for a milkshake).
Malia has created a diving challenge, aiming to reach 200 points from dives weighted by difficulty, which means she will do between 100-400 dives. And she is definitely tagging along on some or all of Tim's bike trips because: ice cream.
Scott will join Gail and Tim on some of their bike trips.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease. ALS attacks cells in the brain and spinal cord that are needed to keep muscles moving, leading to muscle weakness and paralysis. Most patients maintain their mental functioning so they are essentially trapped in their own bodies, unable to move or speak. As breathing and swallowing muscles lose function, death occurs unless a patient opts to use a ventilator and/or a feeding tube. ALS is a torturous disease that affects the entire family. The emotional and physical toll of the disease itself combines with lost income and a huge need for caregiving, equipment, medications, and doctor's appointments.
Why we are fundraising:
Our family is dearly missing several loved ones lost to ALS: Gail's mom Julie, Aunt Joyce, Uncle George, and cousin Craig, and her Uncle Gene continues to battle the disease. We are fundraising with hope that research and drug trials will yield an effective treatment or cure for ALS so no one else has to suffer this disease.
