Here at the African Education Program (AEP), we have had to pivot on our mission from providing life-changing education programs to life-saving support through food distribution to keep our girls and boys alive. Families in Zambia do not have the luxury of staying at home while the coronavirus runs rampant in their communities. Most parents are day laborers or sell their goods at the local markets to feed their families on a DAILY basis. The only way we could keep our beneficiaries and their families safe from the virus and alive was by providing enough food for them to stay in place.
In early April, we created the COVID-19 Emergency Relief Family Fund and raised $18,000 in 4 days. This allowed us to carry out the food distribution quickly and efficiently with our Zambian staff following CDC guidelines for safety. For three weeks, our families have been able to stay home and help flatten the curve in their community. Recent reports still show the number of deaths increasing in Zambia and COVID-19 infections are still on the rise. Therefore, we are on to our next goal for a second food distribution. Will you help us GOAL further?
