The Waterloo Farm and Dewey School Museum has been a part of local history for generations. For many children it is a much anticipated field trip destination. Other families visit for events such as Pioneer Day or our annual tractor show. Still others have found a valuable place to volunteer their time. Even if you have never visited, chances are you know several people who have enjoyed a visit with us. And now we are asking for your help. Due to Covid-19, the museum has been unable to host in-person events, eliminating our main funding source.
The future of this museum is the farmhouse. We are organizing a fundraising drive over the new season to help raise funds for the replacement of the farmhouse roof. The current roof consisting of wooden shingles is reaching the end of its life and urgently needs to be replaced to extend the life of the building into the future. A metal roof once existed on the farmhouse, so we will be replacing the wood shingles with a metal roof. This is more cost efficient and would be a one- time replacement cost good for 100years. At one time the farmhouse did have a metal roof, so replacing it will take us to the era of the 1890’s look, the heyday of the farm’s booming success. All this work will be done in a historical fashion to restore its integrity. Replacing the wood shakes with metal will also be a cost saving measure by reducing insurance costs. We are hoping to install our iconic windmill this summer after completion of repairs, and the Dewey Schoolhouse Museum will be getting a facelift with a new porch and steps.
Due to the age of the farm--2019 marked 175 years since the time the Really family first settled and began building--upkeep and repair needs are constant. We have many projects prepared as time and funding become available, including modern amenities that would help the museum to better serve patrons. In addition to donating, other ways to help include purchasing a membership, attending events, making a purchase at the gift shop, or becoming a volunteer. Please consider donating to help keep our unique history alive for future generations.
