What is Water For People?
In Hawaii, most of us don’t have to worry about where we’ll find safe drinkable water or where we’ll use the bathroom. Many around the world, unfortunately, do have to worry about these issues.
Water For People (WFP) is helping to solve this crisis by providing water and sanitation solutions for “Everyone Forever.” WFP was created in 1991 under the American Water Works Association (AWWA), with the vision of a world where every person has access to reliable and safe water and sanitation services. Basically, WFP's goal is for itself to be nonexistent one day, when water and sanitation issues have been solved.
What does Water For People do?
Close to us, there have been WFP projects on various Pacific islands, including Palau and the Federated States of Micronesia. One of the projects included installing solar pasteurization at a Palau school. Students would fill up their bottles at the end of the day so that they would have clean water to take home! To date, the system is maintained by the local community. WFP currently has programs in 9 countries, bringing together local resources, including technicians, entrepreneurs, community members, and government officials to build and deliver lasting water and sanitation services. About 200 employees in these countries execute the projects, and all are native to the countries they work in. WFP also provides water quality monitoring for a minimum of 10 years to ensure the systems are functioning properly.
