For every maternal death in the world, there are an additional 20-30 women who develop pregnancy-related complications—obstetric fistula being the worst of these. An obstetric fistula is an abnormal opening between the vagina and bladder (vesicovaginal fistula) or rectum (rectovaginal fistula), leaving a woman incontinent, unable to control urine or feces or both. As a result of this condition, women are normally shamed and ostracized from their communities and also have to deal with the loss of their child at a time when they urgently need physical and emotional assistance.
The Fistula Foundation is consistently rated as one of the most effective and transparent non-profits. Instead of giving us a wedding gift, we would love it if you would partner in their mission: treating obstetric fistula. Caleb has worked in this field and cares deeply about this issue. The Fistula Foundation estimates the cost of one life changing surgery is $586. We would love to fund at least 1 of these operations.
“Maternal health is woefully neglected and those suffering fistulas are completely voiceless – young, female, poor, rural, and ostracized. They are the 21st century’s lepers.” – Nicholas D. Kristof, The New York Times
