As you undoubtedly know, summer in Los Angeles is a most extraordinary time! With long sunny days and warm summer nights come amazing opportunities to partake in all that our magnificent city has to offer. From fun at the beaches to summer concerts under the stars, our city is a fascinating place to explore a bounty of cultural experiences and opportunities to learn about the world, explore different perspectives and expand one's horizons. For many youth struggling with homelessness, though, these experiences are out of reach as their days are spent seeking resources to ensure that their most basic needs are met. Without the access or opportunity to participate in some of these formative experiences, which we know can be foundational to a young person's development of identity and sense of belonging, these young people are at risk of being isolated by their economic circumstances. Marginalized and at risk of remaining disconnected in their own communities, these youth are likely to miss out on the very opportunities that could be incredibly meaningful as they begin to explore who they are and who they want to become—as learners and explorers, cultural consumers, artists, self-sufficient adults and as members of our community. At My Friend’s Place, we know that these opportunities to experience the world are critical to a young person's development. In addition to providing our young people with programs and services that support that youth's trajectory toward wellness and self-sufficiency, including basic needs services, skill building and employment readiness workshops, case management and housing services, My Friend's Place offers a host of opportunities each summer for young people to get out into the city on special summer field trips to explore all that Los Angeles has to offer. This summer, young people at My Friend's Place have the opportunity to attend a concert at Hollywood Bowl, spend an afternoon at MOCA, explore the Huntington Library and Gardens and visit the beach for surfing lessons, all opportunities for young people to learn new skills, enjoy new experiences and expand their horizons.
