Van Leir Girls here to help spread awareness of Esophageal Cancer.
Many of you know, but incase you did not, our father, Richard Van Leir, was diagnosed with Esophageal Cancer in the summer of 2017. It all started when he was having cronic heart burn, he didnt put much thought into it until August 2017 when it was so bad that he would throw up after eating each meal. He went and saw the Drs. and they didnt put much thought into it and unfortunatly he was unable to see a specialist until September 2017. At that point they recommemnded an endoscope to see what was going on and by October they found the tumor in his throat, right above the lining of his stomach. At this point our dad was on a feeding tube which was really hard on him and made it difficult for him to get the nurishment his body needed. Our dad did not have the best health insurance so by the time they were able to perform surgery it was already November and when they went in to try and remove it, it was pretty in opperable. By the middle of Decemeber they finally decided to start chemo along with an MRI to see how the cancer progressed. Once we got the MRI results back they had found out that the cancer had spread to most of the middle of his body and into his bones. Our dad did two rounds of chemo before deciding to just live out the rest of his days not feeling so sick. The first week in Janurary, he fell ill and was rushed to the hospital, not sure if he would make it. Our dad was there for about 4 days before he passed away surrounded by all of those who loved him the most.
We are Spreading awareness in hopes that people will understand the early signs of the cancer and get the help they need along the way.
Our dad was a rockstar. He loved to play the guitar, loved to go to the river, loved to fly little air planes, loved emeinem, and loved all the fancy things in life. We hope to help raise awareness to this disease and help those who need it.
