Did you know: By the 4th grade, more than 80% of black boys in many of the nation's school districts have fallen behind their peers in reading?
On Friday June 14th, team Walk IT will be participating in the annual Penguin Random House Global Walk in NYC to benefit Barbershop Books!
Developed in Harlem, Barbershop Books is a community-based program that creates child-friendly reading spaces in barbershops and provides early literacy training to barbers across America. They leverage the cultural significance of barbershops in Black communities to increase boys’ access to culturally relevant, age appropriate, and gender responsive children’s books and to increase out-of-school time reading among young black boys.
Every step we take on the walk will help nurture young readers from underrepresented communities.
Together, Penguin Random House and Barbershop Books can help create an environment that fosters a passion for reading.
