Parkinson's Community Walk-Iowa City

Sunday, September 29, 2019

Terry Trueblood Recreation Area

579 McCollister Blvd

Iowa City

Please join us for a charity community walk to increase awareness of Parkinson’s disease, support our local Parkinson’s community, and raise money to provide support, education and free resources to people with Parkinson’s disease.

Proceeds from the Walk for Parkinson's will be shared between the Iowa City Support Group and The Parkinson's Foundation for national research and support.  Our goal locally is to raise money to fund free exercise classes for those with Parkinson's Disease in the Iowa City area. Classes are currently offered at the Iowa City Senior Center. Participants are charged a per class fee, but we would like to remove any financial barriers by offering free classes.  A recent study on the economic burden of Parkinson's revealed the total cost in the US is $51.9 billion per year.  That includes direct medical costs, as well as non-medical costs such as lost wages, early forced retirement, and family caregiver time.

Exercise isn't a luxury for people with Parkinson's. It is proven to be an important therapy for those with PD. Research has shown that exercise can improve gait, balance, tremor, flexibility, grip strength and motor coordination. Plus, group exercise promotes socialization and prevents isolation. Removing any cost barrier of exercise classes would help to improve the lives of those with PD in our area.

Why Walk?

Because every nine minutes someone is diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.

The more funds we raise, the more people we can help.
