3 miles is a small distance to go to build hunger awareness in your own backyard. Hundreds of walkers and runners from the community and area congregations will be traveling on a route through Olde Towne and Downtown Portsmouth on Saturday morning, May 4th. Festivities and sign-up begin at 8:00am. The walk itself starts promptly at 9:00am (beginning and ending at the Oasis building). This year we ask that walkers chose a side in the fight against hunger and come representing the side they chose (Wizards or Zombies). These walkers will be getting sponsors for their efforts and will be donating all of the proceeds to Oasis Social Ministry. Operating uninterrupted since 1970, Oasis has been continuously meeting the basic socio-economic needs of this region. Celebrating over 48 years of community service, Oasis was birthed by five local Catholic Parishes. Today it has evolved into an ecumenical multi-serving agency committed to helping individuals and families to meet their basic needs. Some of our statistics from the last year are: 9,000- individuals assisted through our food pantry. $306,000- Value of items given away by the thrift store. 185,000- Number of meals provided by the combined efforts of the food pantry and soup kitchen. $34,000- Estimated value of Holiday food and gifts given during Christmas and Thanksgiving.
All pre-registered participants will get a limited-edition tee shirt. . We're also accepting day-of-event registrations on May 4th, but do yourself a favor (and guarantee yourself a fab tee shirt) by pre-registering online.
