WESTON NEEDS YOU!
Each year Weston Area Emergency Support (WAES) has worked with Weston Park Baptist Church to offer a "holiday hamper" in December. This hamper was developed to help individuals and families have extra food and a special meal during the holiday season. This year this food distribution will be very important to families but must be done in a very different way. This campaign hopes to raise $10,000 to purchase the food necessary for the holiday distribution.
WAES had to dramatically alter its service model at the onset of the COVID pandemic in March 2020. WAES has moved from a shopping model food bank to distributing pre-packed hampers based on family size and need. WAES continues to offer a wide variety of food, including eggs, milk, fresh fruit, and vegetables as well as non-perishable food and personal care products.
Before March 2020 WAES received an average of 650 visits per month. Since March of this year, their visits have increased to an average of 2,500 per month, 33% of whom are children and youth. This massive increase in visits has driven WAES to purchase more food each week to offset the decline in food donations. We are distributing about 4 tonnes of food each week.
A portion of the funds will also be donated to 60 WPBC “silent families” who have requested discretion in their need and whom WPBC has been providing for year over year.
