Due to the effect of the Covid-19 outbreak in Hamilton County, the Hamilton County Department of Education gave parents learning option choices for their children for the fall semester of the 2020-2021 academic school year. One the options, HCS at Home, requires students learn in a full-time remote setting while still remaining connected to their home school. Approximately 14,000 parents systemwide chose HCS at Home because their children have significant health challenges or someone in their household is at risk for Covid-19 infection.
As a result, some parents in more affluent communities were able to hire teachers to assist their children with their remote learning requirements. However, many low-income students lack adequate technology and instructional supervision because their parents are essential workers and cannot afford the instructional supervision their children need.
First Baptist Cares, a 501c3 organization, has created 2 virtual learning centers in 2 local churches in the Chattanooga area where underserved children will receive the technology support and instructional supervision needed to thrive in a remote learning environment.
