Did you know that home fires kill more Americans each year compared to all other natural disasters combined? Sadly, on average, seven Americans are killed in home fires each day.
By having working smoke alarms, a household is twice as likely to survive a home fire event should it occur.
As a result, the Red Cross launched its Home Fire Campaign in 2014, with the commitment to reduce fire-related injuries and deaths nationwide. Through this effort, the Red Cross has saved over 741 lives nationwide, including six right here in North Texas.
With much of the country practicing social distancing, now is a great time to test the smoke alarms in your home, review fire safety tips, and formulate at least two fire escape plans. Learn more by joining the North Texas Region's first Virtual Home Fire Safety Event on May 20th from 2-3 pm.
During the Facebook Live event, Red Cross volunteers and community partners will show you how to test your smoke alarms, discuss critical fire safety and review other measures you can take now to improve the safety of your household.
None of this work would be possible without the support and generosity of Red Cross donors. Through your donations towards the Home Fire Campaign, you help to ensure that everyone living in our community has equal access to home fire preparedness resources and the ability to have smoke alarms in their home.
We are also excited to announce that every gift to our Home Fire Campaign through June 30th will be generously matched by our Sound the Alarm Regional Ambassador, BJ Coffman (up to $75,000).
Help us to make a difference in our community by donating today, and help us to #EndHomeFires.
