I finally did it! I qualified for the Boston Marathon! The qualifying race was in St. George, Utah on October 6, 2018. My time was good enough to give me a 5-minute cushion, so I was more hopeful than the previous year when I was 1 min-40 seconds under and ended up missing the cut-off by just over a minute.
My training program was going well and I was plugging away when the world shut down for the global pandemic. Everything stopped - except for my training. I was holding out hope that the Marathon would continue, at least on it's newly scheduled date of September 14, 2020. That wasn't in the cards either. But when the Marathon organizers offered a virtual experience, I jumped at the opportunity as I really wanted to run the race. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that it could turn into a fundraiser and it all came together: I'd run the virtual Boston Marathon 2020 on September 11th, and the obvious choice of charities was Tunnel to Towers. My wife, Carinne, is from New York so it seemed like this was meant to be in this year of firsts for so many people.
I've chosen to run it on my treadmill - all 26.2 miles! The race will be a bit of a party, not necessarily for me, although I am sure I'll be energized by the cheers and support. We live in a great small town and our neighborhood restaurant - Richmond Bar & Grill in El Segundo (CA) - has generously offered to run specials during the race, giving a chunk of their sales to Tunnel to Towers. We'll be sharing updates on social media and my wife has even agreed to be a Mile Marker Girl!
On September 11, 2020, in support of the Tunnel to Towers Gold Star Families Program, I will run the (virtual) 2020 Boston Marathon. Please help us make a difference for this incredible organization and donate to the cause. Then share this with your friends and family - let's make a difference together.
