At the Vera Institute of Justice, our mission is to drive change, to urgently build and improve justice systems that ensure fairness, promote safety, and strengthen communities. Vera is committed to defending American values that are now at risk: justice, fairness, and due process. Our work is built on the belief that no matter the color of your skin, how much money you have in your wallet, or where you or your family come from, you deserve access to these basic human rights. We work directly with the leaders who run, and can transform, the public institutions that deliver justice. We help them change our police departments, the immigration system, our courts, and our jails and prisons. Throughout the last year we pushed for and achieved a commitment to close New York City’s notorious Rikers Island jail, long considered a moral stain on the city. We activated 11 cities and counties—both red and blue—to commit to funding legal defense services to ensure that immigrants will not be detained and permanently separated from their families solely because of their inability to afford a lawyer. And, for those who are serving prison sentences, we are providing education to prepare them for life outside of prison, and fighting for their human rights by curbing the use of solitary confinement.
