Our Capitol Riverfront neighbors need your help during the COVID-19 crisis. The Capitol Riverfront BID is raising funds in partnership with the Van Ness Elementary PTO to assist 15 neighborhood families in need of additional food support and Van Ness Elementary students who require devices and hotspots to successfully complete their remote schoolwork. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, all classes have moved online. While this is affecting all teachers, students, and parents, it is having the greatest impact on at-risk students who rely on meals provided by DC Public Schools (DCPS) and do not own the technology needed to successfully learn from home. While DCPS has made the recently-purchased ‘Empowered Learner Initiative’ (ELI) devices available for families to loan from the school, Van Ness would like to permanently address the digital divide by purchasing devices that students can keep beyond school closure.
We are hoping to hit our goal of $10,000 which will cover the cost of a $20 gift card per week to Harris Teeter for these 15 families in need of additional food support beyond the one school-provided lunch for the rest of the school year (10 weeks) as well as funds towards devices and hotspots.
The Capitol Riverfront BID has launched this fundraiser with $500 and will additionally be matching donations for the first $500 contributed. We hope anyone who can give will. Thank you for your support!
