In August of this year my dad had to have emergency bypass surgery. One minute he was having a routine test and less than 24 hours later he was on an operating table. He did not have to be placed on the heart-lung machine and the surgeon used titanium plates to close up his sternum instead of wires. He's done well and recovered quickly because because of these advancements. Heart health also happens to be the reason I ever went out for that first run years ago. My third grandparent was recovering from open heart surgery and I knew I had to do something to break the cycle. I would have never thought I'd be running marathons! I am running the MS Gulf Coast Marathon in honor of my dad and want to give back to an organization whose research and efforts has done so much for my loved ones.
