This Aichi Val D-3 replica was built for the blockbuster movie “TORA, TORA, TORA.” After the movie it was acquired by the CAF and served in the TORA demonstration team for decades. She hasn’t flown for over two years and now shows her age. It seemed like this old Val was destined to become a static display aircraft. When the members of the “Tex” Hill Wing learned of her, they felt that restoring theVal would be a great project for the Wing. The Tora group was gracious enough to let her go and the “Tex” Hill Wing has adopted her.
TheVal has been dismantled and most of the aircraft is at the Stinson Airport in San Antonio. The remainder must be transferred from Dallas. The airframe will be inspected and repaired, and reconstructed. The engine and propeller will be sent out for overhaul. The biggest expense for this Val project will be the overhaul of the PW R-1340 engine and propeller. The Wing is trying to raise $15,000 to jumpstart the overall restoration, which will be a $60,000 project.
Within one year the “Tex” Hill Wing expects this Val replica to be restored, airworthy, and in the best shape she’s ever been. She will be immediately put to work representing the enemy of “Tex” Hill during his days as a “Flying Tiger”. Please help this team reach this goal so this aircraft can Educate, Inspire, and Honor for years to come.
