Children in the Philippines who live in extreme poverty lack access to quality healthcare. They are often denied assistance.
Meet Prince Sky! He is 10 months old and has spina bifida - hydrocephalus and a myelomeningocele. He lives in the Philippines. (Myelomeningocele is a severe form of spina bifida in which the spinal cord and nerves develop outside of the body and are contained in a fluid-filled sac that is visible outside of the back area. These babies typically have weakness and loss of sensation below the sac.)
You see that white bulge on his back? That is ointment and gauze wrapped tenderly around a large bulge (the myelomeningocele). He needs urgent supplies such as ointment (which they apply multiple times a day), syringes, gauze, diapers, formula, and much more. Due to a back up on online orders, it has taken two weeks just to confirm his order with the local pharmacy.
If you're wondering why he hasn't had surgery. It's for three reasons. 1) the doctors didn't diagnose the baby properly at birth 2) COVID / lockdown and his father was unable to take him in for a check up and 3) they no money for surgery. The total we need to cover his needs for one month is $537. We are also in process of getting him the surgery he needs.
