"At this moment in time, the United States is being tested. After months of isolation due to COVID-19, we're now confronting the reality that we do not live in a fair and equitable society. And, in fact, we never have. As an organization whose mission is to fight hunger and reduce food waste, Move For Hunger cannot ignore the fact that Black households experience hunger at more than twice the rate of White households. Black Americans are paid less, are incarcerated at disproportionately higher rates, and are still subjected to housing discrimination.
Hunger is a human rights issue, and we, as a society, must better address the reasons WHY people are going hungry, instead of continuing to rely on food banks and pantries to solve the problem. America is often referred to as "The Land of Opportunity." Sadly, the opportunities have never been evenly distributed.
Each and every one of us has the responsibility to work to create an equitable and just society. Now is the time to reflect, to confront hard truths, to empathize, to listen, and to create bold, innovative action that lifts up communities and transforms the lives of millions.
While we know we don't have all the answers, Move For Hunger commits to:
*Using our platform to provide more educational resources about how hunger is caused by racial inequities.
*Elevating the voices of leaders of color in the industries we work in.
*Creating the space for our team members to talk about these issues and make recommendations on how we can improve our work.
*Collaborating with other organizations who are tackling these issues head on.
Move For Hunger stands with the Black community. Black Lives Matter."---Adam Lowy, Executive Director & Founder, Move For Hunger
