Funds raised through the Run for Krystle Marathon Program will support the Krystle Campbell Scholarship Fund at UMass Boston.
This fund was started in memory of UMass Boston alumna, Krystle Campbell, who lost her life in the 2013 marathon bombing. Out of this heartbreak, symbols of strength, perseverance, and solidarity have emerged. One inspiring example is the generous donation from former UMass Trustee Richard Campbell, who established this scholarship fund to support educational opportunities for students like Krystle, pursuing a degree in business at the University of Massachusetts.
Each year, two students who demonstrate a need for financial assistance are awarded $5,000 scholarships. The students selected stand out among their peers for their exceptional grades, volunteer work, involvement in the university and community, and all around excellence in academics. More than 80 students apply for the scholarship each year and many state that without financial aid, they would not be able to complete their degree.
A past recipient stated: “I am completely financially independent. Paying for school, rent, and living expenses has required extreme budgeting, scholarship searching, and several jobs to make ends meet. It has been the hardest challenge of my life. This scholarship will provide me with the financial security to prosper in my final year of school. I cannot express in words how much this means to me, and how much it will help me.”
Krystle Campbell's enthusiasm for learning, dedication to her family, and remarkable work ethic live on in the scholarship fund established in her name.
