Hi I am Umar Mukhtar from Pakitan. I am a renewable energy and environment researcher at SAARC Energy Center. My aim of this campaign is to gather funds for Climate Reality Leadership Training taking place in Brisbane Australia from 5-7 June 2019.
About the Training:
This intensive three-day event provides potential climate activists concerned about the future of our planet with a strong understanding of climate science as well as the critical communications, strategy, and advocacy skills necessary to mobilise communities and catalyse solutions to the climate crisis. The event will offer a rare opportunity to learn directly from former US Vice President Al-Gore about how to raise awareness of climate change and inspire people everywhere to act – just as he’s done with the landmark films "An Inconvenient Truth" and "An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power".
Attendees will also have the chance to join a range of in-depth, theme-based, and practical skill-building workshops that explore key climate challenges and offer insights into solutions from an extraordinary lineup of scientists, policymakers, business and technology innovators, and communicators. Together, these sessions will develop and empower a diverse and powerful movement ready, willing, and able to rise to the challenge of solving the climate crisis.
It was back in summer 2011, that Pakistan, a nation of 210 million population faced one of the most severe floods in its history. Due to abnormally intense rainfalls, 1/5th of the land of Pakistan was submerged in water, and tremendous amount of property and infrastructure was damaged. I was a student at that time, and the floods left a deep imprint on my young mind. I actively took part in the civilian relief operations, raising around PKR100,000 (USD 1100 in 2011). The campaign motivated me to study more about climate change, and eventually I took up Renewable Energy as my majors in university to tackle the climate change.
Moving on from 2011, the summer floods became an unusual recurring pattern, and now in 2019, these floods are now even occuring in winters (https://reliefweb.int/report/pakistan/pakistan-floods-balochistan-6-march-2019 ). Pakistan produces less CO2 per capita, however it is one of the most endangered country due to climate change. The mighty Himalayas and Karakorum mountains in the north Pakistan face the danger of melting and causing huge damage to the 210 million people living downstream.
In this context, I have been carrying out my training and activism against the dangers of climate change over the past 5 years. However, as with all kinds of activism, one needs to develop a good network of influencers, and collaborate with them. This opportunity has been presented to me in the form of my selection into the Climate Reality Leadership Training taking place in Brisbane, Australia. Al-Gore, the former US vice president has launced the Climate Reality Leadership Training to create and train climate action leaders all across the globe. These leaders will be responsible for highlighing the issues and coordinating with national media in pursuit of climate action related activities. This training is really important for me as an individual and for my country overall because not only we are extremely endangered, but also lack the capacity and political will to take action against climate change. Radical activism needs to be initiated, and as a climate reality Leader in Pakistan, I will be able to make use of my networks developed in during this training to raise awareness in my country.
This is a 3 days training, taking place in 5-7 June 2019. However, I am unable to fund my travel to Australia because of financial situation. Securing a place in this training is very tough, and having done that, now I am actively looking forward to support from the global community to show their kindness in funding a training, which might enable me to achieve my dream of climate activism and might reap enormous benefits for my country. This is my first time on any crowdfunding platform, so Im unaware of the ethics of crowdfunding, however, if someone wants to reach out to me for verification purposes, do feel free to drop me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org
