The American Red Cross serving the Greater San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys Board of Directors launched a campaign to purchase two Community Emergency Vehicles that will be assigned to our Pomona Blood Center and will serve the entire Greater Los Angeles Region. The total cost of both vehicles is $56,000. The Board of Directors has generously donated over $41,000 and now we are asking for your support to help us to reach our goal.
During the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, the American Red Cross continues to supply blood products for patients in need of transfusions, including those who need surgery, cancer treatments or trauma victims.
In addition, the Red Cross is supporting the collection and distribution of convalescent plasma, a potentially lifesaving treatment for critically ill COVID-19 patients. People who have fully recovered from COVID-19 have antibodies in their plasma that can attack the virus.
But before this can happen, each unit of blood must traverse a complex journey, which is only possible with our fleet of cars, SUVs, cargo vans and trucks. While they seldom show up in headlines, these community emergency vehicles are on the road every day, making our lifesaving work possible.
Our chapter has committed to purchase two vehicles to ensure we continue delivering our lifesaving mission:
Chrysler ProMaster City Cargo Van | $28,000
These vehicles transport blood from processing, testing and storage centers and deliver it to patients in need at hospitals.
Vehicles also provide emergency delivery of platelets, rare blood, or of blood when there is a shortage at hospitals.
There remains an ongoing need for platelet donations due to their short, five-day shelf life.
There is no known end date in this fight against coronavirus and the Red Cross needs the help of blood and platelet donors and blood drive hosts to maintain a sufficient blood supply for weeks to come. It’s important to remember that blood is perishable and cannot be stockpiled.
