Outsiders Farm & Sanctuary is a grassroots 501c3 non-profit sanctuary. We currently hous 296 potbelly and farm pigs, 30 ducks, 100 chickens, many rescued dogs and cats, 2 cows, and 14 goats. We rely on donations to be able to provide food, shelter, and medical care. We are known for and pride ourselves on the medical care and refuge we are able to extend to so many animals in need. We have faced many challenges and overcome many hurdles in our nearly three years operating as an organization, but we have hit a major problem that we cannot solve without your help.
In less than 2 years, our rescue has been through 4 used vehicles. We rely on a vehicle to provide life saving transport for animals in need of rescue, trips to the Vet, a way to get to the feed store or store for supplies, a way to haul donated produce or large bulk produce orders, and to even get our numerous giant bags of towels, blankets, and animal beds to the laundromat. We are not fancy folk, we have made many personal sacrifices as a family and live very minimally to be able to afford the Sanctuary that has become home to hundreds of otherwise homeless animals. We have driven ugly vehicles to get the job done, we've been sold lemons and had to pay thousands to get them running, we have only had the budget to afford vehicles that are 20 years old, and we have put thousands of miles on them, driving them til they can't drive another mile.
On Easter Sunday, our engine blew in our Sanctuary SUV. A vehicle we searched high and low to find, and had only had for six months, now needs repairs that cost more than the vehicle is worth itsself. We have already scanned Craigslist and Marketplace, we have put out the word to see if anyone has an extra van or SUV to donate, but the very old, used car situation is not sustainable for us an organization. Summers in Georgia are brutal, and being in rural areas often for rescues, we cannot risk breaking down and being stranded on the road for hours with an animal inside the vehicle. Even if we can scrounge up the money for another 20+ year old vehicle with 250,000 miles on it, we will find ourselves back shopping for another vehicle in a few short months.
This is where we need your help. We need to purchase a NEW transport vehicle. One that comes with a warranty that will allows us to not only get back and forth to the vet and where we need to go, but also give us the stability, security, and peace of mind to be able to do more adoption transports. We have not been able to find as many homes for our adoptable pigs, because we have not had a reliable vehicle to transport and do home checks with.
We met with the Ford Dealership this morning and the perfect van to meet our needs for the Sanctuary would be custom built. The deposit required to start the order is $1000, and it would take 9-12 weeks for the Van to be delivered to the dealership. We would then pay the full amount, tax, title, registration. The Vehicle will belong to the organization. This is not a personal vehicle. This is for THE animals.
After over a week of going back and forth with the dealership, we've crossed possible financing off the list. We were approved for a much smaller van that just debuted to consumers in 2020 and felt like it had too many limitations and could not pull our trailers. Using it for animal transport or donation pick ups would require multiple trips. We have been shopping the pre-owned market and have found that our best bet to getting us into a GOOD, RELIABLE vehicle will be to buy pre-owned or used and purchase a warranty with it. This will still be a much newer, fewer miles vehicle, but much easier for us to hopefully fundraise for. We are currently sharing our personal vehicle right now to get Dan to work and for us to have it to pick up feed, medicines, vet appointments, supplies and the amount of gas we are going thru is really adding up. Not to mention our personal vehicle almost has 300K miles on it, we are really trying to limit excess usage. If we drive that to it's death we have no vehicle at all for anything. If you could please help us by donating, the sooner we can get a Van for the Sanctuary, it will relieve a TON of stress and allow us to get the things dones that we need to for our animals here at the Sanctuary and helping animals in need!
