We here at Pride@GoFundMe are excited to tell you about San Diego Pride’s Transgender Day of Empowerment and the Tracie Jada O’Brien Scholarship Fund. Events like this one show our transgender youth that their community stands proudly with them as they seek opportunity, growth, and education.
From the San Diego Pride website:
“A national school climate survey by GLSEN found that 75% of transgender youth feel unsafe at school, and those who are able to persevere had significantly lower GPAs, were more likely to miss school, and were less likely to plan on continuing their education…”
“The scholarship fund is one of the first scholarships of its kind focused on transgender student success in San Diego.”
About Tracie Jada O’Brien
Tracie Jada O'Brien has been a staunch vocal activist for causes related to every aspect of the transgender experience in our society. She has taken her experiences and struggles into her work, fighting for better access and more understanding throughout the medical, education, housing, and financial communities.
She founded San Diego's Transgender Day of Empowerment well over a decade ago and the Scholarship has a record number applicants this year.
About the Scholarship
“This scholarship is open to students from or residing in San Diego County that identify as transgender, are living outside of the gender binary and/or are in the process of transitioning their gender. This scholarship fund will grant monetary scholarships every year, as funds permit, to students that will be starting or continuing their education at 2-year College, 4-year College, technical, grad school, or vocational training programs. Scholarships will be awarded at the Transgender Day of Empowerment on Friday, April 3, 2020, at The San Diego LGBT Community Center.”
From discovering their identity to discovering their career goals, these students encounter challenges that don’t always have a straight-forward answer. This scholarship will provide them with the financial support to mitigate the additional stress that continued education comes with.
Call to Action
We invite you to join us in fundraising for this amazing cause, and celebrating our transgender youth. This is our chance to invest in the future of our community. By giving what you can, your contributions provide these students with resources that they otherwise may not have access to. It is an opportunity to change the trajectory of their lives, and show them that we as a community support their dreams and aspirations.
All donations go directly to the scholarship. Whatever is not awarded this year will be preserved for next year.
