Traditional artists and tradition bearers in Arizona have been hit hard by Covid19 stay-at-home directives, many losing access to audiences or students and some unable to cover basic needs of food and rent. We serve these community members through our regular programming (Tucson Meet Yourself Folklife Festival and our annual Master-Apprentice Artist Award).
Because the Southwest Folklife Alliance is the only intermediary support in Arizona for traditional artists & tradition bearers we have created the:
TRADITIONAL ARTIST COVID-19 EMERGENCY RELIEF FUND
Traditional artists who complete our survey will qualify for up $500 in direct emergency relief funds. ALL funds help us get artists and tradition bearers from ethnic & marginalized communities the basic support they need. The Arizona Commission on the Arts will match up to $10K.
This constituency is particularly vulnerable: They are primarily people aged 40-65+, living in remote or historically marginalized neighborhoods in Arizona. Based on surveys we've conducted by phone in the past few weeks, we have heard difficult stories from them, including:
"We are currently two months behind on our mortgage ... We also don't have internet access at home, it's devastating."
"I need immediate assistance with money for my utility bills, for wood, also need basic necessitates like grocery items and paper products (tissue, toilet paper)"
"No income, limited access to resources. No access to gloves, face masks other disinfectant items."
Thank you for supporting these valuable people, their knowledge, and our collective heritage in Arizona.
