Trust for Public Land Team: Joan Keener, Carter Strickland, Nicole Gueron and Laura Conway are Hiking Rock the Ridge!
On May 4th we will be participating in the Rock the Ridge 50-mile Endurance Challenge with two goals: to finish the full 50-miles (as part of our 4-person Trust for Public Land relay team) and to raise money for Mohonk Preserve, a vital nonprofit land preservation organization in Ulster County, NY.
Because of the Preserve's work, over 8,000 acres in the beautiful Shawangunk Mountains region has been protected and is considered “one of Earth’s last great places.” My first rock-climbing experience was in The Shawangunks (or the "Gunks" as they are known) and looking out at the vista below after making it to the top of "Handy Andy" on that June day in 1989 ranks among the most exhilarating moments of my life. I have loved the Mohonk area ever since. I’m reaching out to my friends and family to support this amazing organization and help me raise $500 in support their mission: to protect the Shawangunk Mountains region and inspire people to care for, enjoy, and explore their natural world.
Just click the DONATE button to the right to help with this effort. Your donation, no matter the size, will go far to support Mohonk Preserve’s commitment to land stewardship, land protection, environmental education and conservation science:
Maintaining a crew over 75 miles of trails and historic carriage roads;
Protecting the land needed for quality natural habitats, and public recreational and restorative space;
Providing school programs and summer camps that help children discover the wonders of the natural world;
Preserve one of the best long-term phenological and weather records in the country, housed at Mohonk Preserve’s Daniel Smiley Research Center.
With warm regards and deep thanks!
*More details on specific programs:
- Education — In 2017, Mohonk Preserve served over 14,500 children including many through STEM education programs which connects at-risk children from nearby cities to innovative outdoor education programs, engaging their senses and inspiring them through nature.
- Land Protection — Protecting key recreation areas, fragile habitats, and scenic viewsheds is only the beginning.
- Land Stewardship — Managing over 8,000 acres takes work! The Preserve helps provide a safe, participatory experience in nature for over 200,000 visitors each year. The Preserve’s team of highly skilled search and rescue Rangers are always on call and ready to assist visitors in trouble.
- Conservation Science — The Preserve’s team of scientists monitor the changing ecology of the Shawangunks and use data to help sustain this regionally important ecosystem.
Fundraisers such as Rock the Ridge enable Mohonk Preserve to keep the land open and accessible to all visitors. We hope that you will give generously in support of your friends and family members who are participating in this year’s 50-mile endurance challenge. Thank you so very much!
