When we worked for Tostan, we were inspired by women and men from across West Africa working to improve their communities. The organization delivers training on human rights, health, and business skills to communities who then lead locally-driven development efforts and social change, including the abandonment of practices like female genital cutting and child marriage.
Here's what they have planned for this year with your help:
"Next year 85 communities in one region of Senegal will test a new module to bring Tostan’s approach to decentralized governance structures. They will aim to improve civic engagement and economic opportunity at the local level. At the same time, communities in The Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau and Mali will gather data about the local government and economic opportunities where they live, in preparation for scaling. By 2020, Tostan and our partner communities will be ready to reach millions more people with one cross-cutting intervention: Tostan’s Community Empowerment Program with Sustained Civic Engagement. With your support, these leaders might just set a new standard for equitable and democratic communities of the future.
