Tom Lewand has known the Carr family for more than 30 years, beginning as a freshman student manager for then-defensive coordinator Lloyd Carr in 1988 on Coach Schembechler’s staff. Continuing to work for the Michigan football team, Tom met Jason Carr during Jason’s career as a student athlete.
After his time at Michigan, Tom went on to become President of the Detroit Lions and then CEO of Shinola Detroit. When Chad was diagnosed with DIPG, the Lions were fortunate to be able to have Chad, Tommy, CJ and the rest of the family come to a game as special guests. A few years later, Shinola had the amazing opportunity to be involved as one of the first partners of the inaugural ChadTough Gala.
“The Carr family has been an amazing inspiration to so many people, including my family. I consider Coach Carr to be more than a friend: he is one of my mentors and a true model for leadership, grace and humility. Tammi and Jason, as we all know, are simply amazing people. What they have done to turn an unimaginable personal tragedy into a triumph that has transformed the fight against DIPG continues to be an unparalleled example of strength, perseverance and faith.”
“It is a real honor to step way out of my comfort zone to support one of the best charitable organizations on the planet. I hope everyone who sees this or who hears about this event can find a way to support ChadTough. Let’s do our part to help defeat DIPG. And if nothing else, I promise to provide some comic relief for a few minutes on the dance floor!”
