My name is Mubarick Masawudu, board member, Green Cross International, a non-profit organization with a mission to address the combined challenges of poverty, security and environmental degradation, we have put together a global campaign to help address an impending global humanitarian catastrophe, famine.
COVID-19 hasn't had the same sort of devasting impact on Africa as it has elsewhere, according to official statistics. That may not last. Experts warn that the pandemic could yet exact a much heavier death toll in the region if it overwhelms local health services which are already fragile. Some worry that relatively weak health systems and patchy testing enabled COVID-19 to progress through Sub-Saharan Africa without fully registering in reported data. The ability to socially distance oneself, in the wake of the pandemic, is a luxury not available to many in Africa.
''Another Pandemic is looming on the heels of the coronavirus; a pandemic of starvation, illiteracy and poverty.'' Nicholas Kristof, an opinion columnist with the New York Times has warned. Experts fear the COVID-19 pandemic may cause famine in combination with drought and conflict already affecting much of Africa - which is home to more than half of the 135 million acutely food-insecure people in crisis in the world according to a UN report.
Africa's high levels of poverty, lack of social safety nets and reliance on low-skilled labour in informal sectors in urban areas makes it particularly vulnerable. Food supply chains have been greatly affected, food shipments are going to countries with the highest bid, resulting in low levels of food on the markets and price spikes in many parts of the continent.
We still have an opportunity to come together to support the needy to avert this looming humanitarian catastrophe. With over 30 national offices across the world, Green Cross will use your donations to provide food items to poor families in Africa.
A gift of $100 will provide dinner for a family of 5 for one whole month.
Thank you very much for your generosity.
